Staff Picks No. 10

Timelapse: Sarah Sze
The Guggenheim Museum
Closes September 10th 2023

Not a show, but worth picking! Sarah Sze uses a variety of media (sound, sculpture, print, etc) in dialogue with the architecture of the Guggenheim, inviting the audience in as both a viewer and a participant. It closes soon (Sept 10th, I believe), so if you see this and want to go together, let me know!!

20 Years of Shinkoyo: Lia Kohl, Qasim Naqvi, Beautifulish
Roulette
Thursday, September 7th 2023

This week (Weds-Sat), Roulette is celebrating the 20th anniversary of local art collective, record label, and champion of DIY emerging experimental works: Shinkoyo. Brilliant music all four nights, I’m particularly excited for Lia Kohl and Qasim Naqvi on Thurs 9/7 and Beautifulish on Sat 9/9. Come through!

My Grandmother’s Eyepatch: Julia VanderVeen
The Kraine Theater
September 14th - September 15th 2023

A great question centers this performance: What happens when an idiot leads a memorial service for a long-deceased family member? I like to respond to death with how I handle everything else: laughter. This solo show has been a hit around the country and I'm so glad it's back in NY for more performances, don't miss it.

Better Than Yesterday's Artists Showcase: Marleen Moise, Anthony McDonald, Angela Denise, Maya Nicole, Carson Morales, and more
Friday, September 15th 2023
Dream Space

I feel like this event is one of those gems that you can't miss because I have honestly have no idea what to expect from this night; the incredible visual artists submitted to an open call and were free to submit anything so the night will be a journey for sure! I’m especially hype for Marleen Moise’s photography that highlights the Black community simply living and being without the performativity expected of them.

Lou Tides: Lou Tides, Sarah Galdes, Lena Engelstein
Public Records
Tuesday, September 12th 2023

EXTREME BIAS ALERT: yep, I’m promoting a show I’m in. But I am simply the accoutrement to an already delicious, complicated, and sexy aural experience that the only Lou Tides could compose for you. During the show, I leave stage and hear the music from the crowd, and it is from that vantage point that I give my highest recommendation.

3 RITES: Life: DELIRIOUS DANCES (Edisa Weeks)
651 Arts
September 14th - September 17th 2023

A piece that deals with the future of our environment, while also visually resembling a "mash-up of a DIY haunted house and Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory". AND all performance installations are made from plastic trash? No need to say more, I'll be there Sept 15th!

Mary Gets Hers: Emma Horwitz, Josiah Davis, Susannah Perkins
Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space
September 11th - October 7 2023

This is Playwrights Realms' first full production back from the pandemic, so let's celebrate with a show about the plague? And weird faith and ~ballsy women! and scheming saints. The reading I had seen was lots of fun and has Big Clubbed Thumb Energy!!

Lori Goldston’s Harry Smith Film Rumination: Lori Goldston with Shoko Nagai & Dave Abramson
The Brick Theater
Monday, September 18th 2023

One of my favorite arty farty hyrbids are musicians live scoring films. When I first moved here in 2004, I saw some Buster Keaton shorts live scored and I was like - THIS IS EVERYTHING. It was one of those moments that unlocked something special in my mind. One of those "I never knew this was possible before I moved to NY" stamps on the filthy little scroll of my life. Now, to have Lori Goldston live score a Harry Smith film at The Brick? Somebody call a medic because I am swooning.

Crack Nerve Boogie Swerve: Alexis Blake, Hannah Seiden, Leah Wilks, Kennedy Hill, Marissa Brown
The Highline
September 6th - September 7th 2023

This is a week where the high line is more than a place you take your relatives who are visiting from CT. It’s a week where performers—a percussionist, two sound artists and four dancers, coming from breakdance, hip hop, contemporary, ballet, West African, and tap—are colliding with glass on the old train tracks above Manhattan. So the one week worth going.

Late Night Snacks: Dynasty Handbag
Bearded Ladies Cabaret
Friday, September 8th 2023

Gather all ye weirdos, gender creeps, and sexy demons: Dynasty Handbag calls out to thee. This weekend there will be “one hour of full Handbag” you of course don’t want to miss. So while you’re still down in Philly, go see the royal freak-highness. Need I say more?
