Staff Picks No. 20

Boy mother / faceless bloom: Juni One Set
NYLA
November 16th - November 18th 2023

All of the pictures of this piece (on the performa website/Dia Beacon site/etc etc) point at this piece being phenomenal. I'm so excited to see it for many reasons, and I do have a soft spot for pieces that has mythology embedded in them.

cryptochrome: written, directed, composed, & performed by Evan Silver aka Tiresias; music direction by Tristan Allen
The Cell Theatre
November 30th - December 9th 2023

cryptochrome premiered at The Exponential Festival in January and I cannot wait to experience it again. This version will be quite different than the past version, but I am certain it will still be mesmerizing and beautiful. If you are into bird stuff, poetic musicality and/or sinking and soaring ... check out cryptochrome.

Coastal Elites: Two Plays About NY and LA: Joey Merlo, Jess Barbagallo and Jack Serio
LUV STORY BAR
November 29th - December 9th 2023

I would not miss this for all the giant paychecks in the world. I would not miss this for all the heavy pours of Makers at Northern Bell on a Wednesday. I would not miss this for a romantic night off with myself in 2023. Not a chance! These three artists are total dreamboats and I cannot wait to see what they have made and check out this bar I have somehow never been to... right off Halsey! Whatttt?!

Faust (The Broken Show): Eric Dyer
The Brick Theater
November 2nd - November 19th 2023

Can I put on a show that's probably already been put before? No worries if not. Lol. But it's the last week of Faust, and everybody should try to see it!! No spoilers here, but it really is special.

The 19th Annual NYC In C: Lea Bertucci, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Yuka Honda, Joanna Mattrey, Matana Roberts, Catherine Sikora-Mingus, and more.
Le Poisson Rouge
Sunday, November 19th 2023

Considered to be one of the first minimalist compositions, Terry Riley’s “In C” was premiered in 1964 by a cadre of soon-to-be luminaries: Riley, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Stuart Dempster, Morton Subotnic, and more. The piece, for any sized ensemble, for any duration, has been performed at LPR annually for the last 19 years. This year’s ensemble is so stacked with astonishing and thoughtful talent, it seems an echo of the piece’s bright premiere: featuring Lea Bertucci, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Yuka Honda, Joanna Mattrey, Matana Roberts, Catherine Sikora-Mingus, and more. Come through!
