1-800-3592-113592: CHILD
MITU580
March 9th - March 16th 2024

A collective of 15 artists creating something together, and something that may or may not include an Italian diamond dynasty in New Jersey, certainly pulls me in. Jersey lore will always get me. Bring on the big accents, bigger hair, and leopard print (or however this show presents my people!).

I'm here to plug one of my favorite experimental performance companies. A maximalist spectacle about a family retail jewelry company-- what more can you ask for? The jingle has been stuck in my head for months now.

When I attended a fundraiser-party for this show earlier this month, it was clear that CHILD is not just creating a performance...they are creating a small little universe. A universe with a live, LOUD, rocking band, gems, glamour, vintage, commerce, and of course...DANCE! Staff Picker Lena Engelstein is indeed a part of this show, along with some of my most other favorite artists in this city. I'll be there on the 12th!

David Kinder: A Life In Oil
Brick Aux
Closes March 9th, 2024

This is a gallery show, but it is a gallery show that performing artists can really dig into. David (my late uncle) painted for 55 years. There are pieces up in the gallery, prints and a slide show of 99 other pieces that are not here. These pieces tell so many stories. They have a great deal of depth. And experiment. And struggle. And creativity. And practice. And patience. And cycles. And returns. And divergences. And pivots. Come be amongst it all for one last day with me.

The Banality of Evil: Meta-Phys Ed.
The Brick Theater
March 21st - April 6th 2024

My sister's a public defender, and we often get into this conversation of the weird relationship that lawyer's have with performance. Maybe that's why this is a format that always clicks with audiences.

It’s the final week of the 2024 Movement Research Festival, which this year invites international dance and movement artists from the Global Practice Sharing program to perform in New York. Every night this week, Wed-Sat (Mar 6-9), looks incredible! In particular, I’m looking forward to Lebanese dancer and performance artist Charlie Prince’s “Cosmic A” at Danspace on Saturday. Come through!

Ice-ing on the Cake: Lee Hoiby, Gabriel Kahane
Loading Dock Theatre
March 7th - March 10th 2024

An opera singer makes a cake, in real time, and as we wait for it to bake, another singer takes a journey through odd classified ads. A site-specific, unexpected opera experience at Loading Dock, a theater that is also a home. All of these things are hard! to! beat!

midair for sometime: Up Until Now Collective
JACK
March 8th - March 24th 2024

It's a multi-sensory immersive installation that examines what the future of interactive performance -- I'm guessing using technology. As someone who's interested in how technology & art can be used together, I'm intrigued!

Larry Owens: Musical Theatre Night
Joe’s Pub
March 11th - March 30th 2024

Although of late force of comedic nature Larry Owens has been busy lighting up our screens small (with a recurring cameo on the salty-sweet “Abbott Elementary”) and silver (portraying the sinister embodiment of Craigslist in Julio Torres’ “Problemista”) alike, last month he was also awarded the Jonathan Larson grant. To celebrate, this prodigal daughter of musical theater will be gracing Joe’s Pub on Monday (with an encore at the end of the month) to share some of his doubtlessly hilarious and humane works in progress.

KNFW: Live from a Tiny Desk: Theda Hammel and Macy Rodman
C’Mon Everybody
Friday, March 8th 2024

To the discerning queer intelligentsia, Theda Hammel and Macy Rodman’s brilliant, deranged podcast brainchild NYMPHOWARS is, in fact, the Only True Podcast. Its latest long form gambit has been a pivot to radio (the titular KNFW, which in the pod’s lore shares a studio with NPR that Theda is not allowed to leave), a morning show for long haul truckers in the flyover states. Their latest, doubtlessly unhinged live show, promises their gloss on NPR’s pop cultural holy grail- the prized Tiny Desk concert.
