Staff Picks No. 51

cunnicularii: Sophie McIntosh
Alchemical Studios
June 28th - July 13th 2024

Good Apples Collective! A crisp name you just wanna take a bite outta. A fable about motherhood, rabbit children, and what we can really promise our offspring, "cunnicularii" is a new play homegrown at Good Apples (with Esmé Maria Ng joining as co-producer). I'm excited about what this new-ish theater company has to offer!

Staffer: Billy McEntee

Roly Pollies: The Million Underscores_ _
The Brick Theater
June 20th - June 21st 2024

Listen, I have tried for a whole year to not just be like - You know what my Staff Pick is? The next Brick show!

Because I do go see a lot of other shows that are incredible. And I do shout them out!

But it is hard to not just scream out how much I love and believe in The Brick programming because I am definitely biased. But I also care so fucking much that I am now like - come at me. Please.

ALSO, in this special instance (which they are all, honestly and truly special instances with different backstories) The Million Underscores_ _ will yet again present work on a full moon, a solstice, an astrologically significant date that everyone in attendance will FEEL and EXPERIENCE and it will be magic in a way I do not even grasp right now. And we will gather before and after in the history and beauty of their work, as captured by Jose Miranda at Brick Aux Gallery.

I ask you - how could this not be my Staff Pick?

Matchess: Whitney Johnson, Haley Fohr, Lula Asplund, Pets, LWG
Union Pool
June 12th - June 16th 2024

I have had the very good fortune to know and admire composer/violist Whitney Johnson (Matchess) for many years and witness her broad curiosities entangling in expanding beauty and weirdness. It’s brain science, patience, dirt magic, twilight, tape wobble, longing, spaciousness, and someone you cherish is singing two rooms away. For this show she’s joined by Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr, and Lula Asplund. Pets, and LWG open. Really stoked for this one! Come through!

Staffer: Joshua Dumas

Perfect City For Sale: Tiffany Zorrilla (aka Lola Libre), Jahmorei Snipes, and Aaron Landsman
Center for Performance Research
Thursday, June 6th 2024

Ah-ah-ah! Three performances-in-progress, covering place, identity, digital colonialism, zoning, algorithms. It sounds like the kind of exhilarating academic-art-making I dreamed undergrad would be. The accompanying roundtables will be perfect for heady thinking in-between my weekend of Pride debauchery.

Staffer: Travis Amiel

playdate fest!: Eisa Davis, David Greenspan, Baba Israel, Samora la Perdida, Kuhoo Verma
Abolitionist Place
Friday, June 21st 2024

Cool artists! New work! New park!(?) Cool park? Hot day.

This free evening of performances orchestrated by En Garde Arts and made possible by Downtown Brooklyn Partnership is also the debut event marking the new (actually redesigned and renamed) park as a performance space, and I appreciate that the voices inaugurating the space come from the artistic lineages they come from. Hopefully we see more free and accessible public performance with this precedent!
