Staff Picks No. 53

Isabel: reid tang, Kedian Keohan
Abrons Arts Center
July 3rd - July 6th 2024

reid and Kedian are already a dream team, but (Tony nominee!) dots on the set? Sounds heavenly. Catch this new play from National Asian American Theatre Company playing through July 6! There's a talking backpack and magical staircase. Again, heavenly.

Samsara: Aakash Odedra Company
Lincoln Center (Rose Theater)
July 11th - July 12th 2024

While a Lincoln Center presentation is a bit mainstream for Staff Picks...the lighting looks really cool, and as of this morning there are limited tickets (which are choose-what-you-pay, minimum of $5) to this dance-duet about the search of our higher selves. So I think it's worth checking out!

The Brick Theater
July 4th - July 13th 2024

This show is about a TikTok personality. I do not have TikTok. It does not matter. The great myth that one must be in on every reference can be dispelled! Is it sexy or nasty or funny or disgusting? Great. I am in.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball: Arturo Lyons, Omari Wiles, Zhailon Levingston, Bill Rauch, André De Shields
PAC NYC
June 13th - August 11th 2024

I had a stunningly joyous close to Pride seeing the wild, sweet, hot, funny, glittering explosion of style, hommage, athleticism, selfhood, camp and celebration that is “Cats: The Jellicle Ball”. It was such a raucous tender party! Choreographed by Arturo Lyons and Omari Wiles, directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, it was just extended! Tix available through August 11th. Come through!

lumberob album release show! lumerob, Alex Tatarsky, Tom Achilles and more!
Sleepwalk
Wednesday, July 17th 2024

Ever since the very first time I saw lumberob perform at a Little Theater at Dixon Place, I have been a big ol fan and I would never ever miss this show. Bring earplugs? And be ready for a night like no other. This is EXACTLY the kind of show I want to go to as I bid farewell to NY.

Permanent Moves / Karl Blau / Joey Slater
Bowery Electric
Wednesday, July 10th 2024

Permanent Moves is Shane Chapman and Julia Sirna-Frest.
They will be joined by Joey Slater (Wheatus) and indie rock legend Karl Blau.

I missed Julia's last show at Sultan Room and I declared - I WILL SEE THE NEXT ONE! Talented musicians make me melt. It is a feeling of awe I am so grateful to be able to experience.

Bill's 44th: Dorothy James & Andy Manjuck
HERE
July 10th - July 28th 2024

A wordless puppet show about a man making the most of his lonely 44th birthday. We love specificity! 44! Not 50 or even 45! I hear this one is delightful and imaginitive, and I've really wanting some more puppet theater in my life.
