Staff Picks No. 77

Richard Nixon Sings with Tim Platt
Union Hall

December 21st 2024

Tim did The Brick karaoke last year, performing Suddenly Seymour with Jo Firestone AND doing an incredible Richard Nixon-does-Fleetwood Mac number. It was inspired.

In August, I went to Union Hall to see his full ass show centered around Richard Nixon singing and it was so much fun. A perfect night out with friends. Filled with surprises and delights.

If you hate this time of year and need to warm your heart with something weird, go to this show. If you love this time of year and want to keep riding that wild high you are on, go to this show.

There is nobody like Tim Platt.

MEOW! : Matthew Antoci and Meaghan Robichaud
Loading Dock
January 10th-17th 2025

Wait has this been a staff pick already? Another one of the many many shows I'm excited for in Jan. Matthew and Meaghan are so so smart and so so creative. I am always excited to see what they do together. I loved MEOW! back at New Works, and am excited to see it at Exponential. :)

Temporary Boyfriend : Malcolm-x Betts and Nile Harris
The Chocolate Factory
January 11th-13th 2025

January is bringing major FOMO for me, since I won't be able to see many performances (due to my own! come see MEOW!). But I'm lucky there's a Monday night performance of Temporary Boyfriend. Malcolm & Nile have worked together in many different formations / contexts, and that history is the starting point for this new project. "this house is not a home" is one of the most seminal, seared-in-my-mind performances I've seen in my time on this little earth, and I'm drooling for more from these two.

Staffer: Matthew Antoci

When I found out that these two were doing a show as part of UTR, I was like - GETTING.TICKET.NOW.
There are a handful of artists that I always bring up when someone says something like - There are no artists making things as wild as Reza Abdoh any more. OR - It has all become so predictable and ruined by MFAs. OR - I don’t know what to go to. There is nothing going on.
Malcom-x Betts and Nile Harris live at the top of that little magnificent list.

For All Your Life : Leslie Cuyjet
CPR (co-presented with New York Live Arts)
December 11th-12th 2024

I heard about this show because people caught it at Chocolate Factory last year and were raving about it! I missed it last time, but won't miss it this time- at CPR and co-hosted with NYLA. One of the many shows I'm excited for in Jan!
