Prelude 2024 : So Many Incredible Artists It Is Wild
The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center
October 16th-October 19th 2024

Noa Picked Prelude last week and I am doing a reminder! Prelude is a really special thing that happens in NY. It is free. You can just go. You can lurk or you can hang out or you can make dates to go with friends. Bring a snack, though. That is my hot tip!

Precarious Luxuries: improvisations, performance, and planning for the unplanned : Ethan Philbrick, Nile Harris, Alex Tatarsky, and Anh Vo
Proshansky Auditorium / Martin E. Segal Theatre Center
Thursday, October 17th 2024

I will be working at my ~day job~ so I tragically cannot attend this afternoon improv-a-thon with four artists I absolutely adore and would gleefully watch read the phonebook. I don't see that this will be streamed online via HowlRound, but if someone at Prelude is reading this and can make that happen...please do!

The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway : Too Many To List!
Town Hall
Monday, October 21st 2024

It's that time of year again for good good shenanigans with The 24 Hour Plays! I have no idea what to share because every single thing that 24 Hours puts on is so wildly different from what I was anticipating in the best way.

In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot : Pooya Mohseni, Ianne Fields Stewart, Deirdre Lovejoy
Playwrights Horizons
October 10th - November 17th 2024

Okay I know there are smaller shows to promote but indulge this one: Susan Smith Blackburn winner, queer aging, vagabond warehouse workers. I've been excited about this play for a while — and now, that cast! — and will be seated.

Sarah : Hussein Smko and Khalil Ayed
LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC)
Tuesday, October 22nd 2024

Oh my gosh there is sooooo much going on! These two artists are both really incredible at their individual practices (dance and visual art), so when they join together it is one of those collaborations that define "what is possible in art" in my mind. Descriptors? Stunning. Layered. Intense. Deep wells of love.

TRYHARD : Ariel Lembeck, Cameron Barnett, Angel Zinovieff
Kestrels
October 18th - October 20th 2024

If TRYHARD is anything like the herb-lime sorbet cube that Ariel was passing out at the most recent installment of Catch, then expect it to hit the spot: zappy, complex, transforming, and deeply refreshing. I'll be there on the 20th!

Staffer: Matthew Antoci

Alert! Another show that I would totally attend, if I was in NY! Dance and sound and light and obsession and searching and letting go... I am vibing hard with all of that. ALSO: Very cool team. Very cool space.

Lea Thomas Album Release : Lea Thomas, Adelyn Strei, Adeline Hotel
Owl Music Parlor
Thursday October 17th 2024

I have such vivid memories of listening to Lea Thomas while wandering the vacant edges of East Williamsburg during the pandemic shutdowns. A haunted peacefulness, an aching, the weird sweetness of encounter another. An echoing in the streetscape and in the songs, too. This week, I’m looking forward to hearing her new record, Cosmos Forever, live, with a release show at the Owl Music Parlor! Adelyn Strei, Adeline Hotel open. Come through!

Zeus 4 : Lauren Holmes and Aneesha Kudtarkar
LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC)
October 17th and 18th 2024

Please do not miss this. This play (so *Lauren*) is so genius. Lots of dogs. Lots of strangers. Lots of strangers that become friends and maybe not. Lots of dogs. And in Boston! This play made me cry while I read it alone at night :')

The Ashlee Simpson Lip Sync : Scout
The Invisible Dog
Tuesday, November 19th 2024

A free event that's an ode to the one and only Ashlee Simpson? 7th Heaven star, two-time Roxie Hart replacement, "Pieces of Me" legend — who sings "Ohhhhh" quite like her? Wikipedia says she has a two-octave range, but we all know she's capable of far more. Come participate in her celebration.
